Dates & Times
When: October 20th - 24th

Q&A / Mentoring: At least 2 hours during the week | 10am - 11am EST & 5pm - 6pm EST
Description
Master containers and build the foundation for working confidently with Docker and Kubernetes. Whether you're new to containers or looking to formalize your knowledge, this week is designed to make sure you're never guessing in production again.
Overview of What You’ll Learn:
This first week provides or reinforces the foundations required to work efficiently with containers.
Docker & Containers Mastery
- Running containers with Docker (foreground/background)
- Images, layers, tags, and building custom images
- Writing efficient Dockerfiles and using build cache
- Networking, multi-stage builds, and image optimization
- Containerized dev environments and Docker Compose
Kubernetes from Theory to Practice
- Core concepts: pods, deployments, services
- Cluster networking, service discovery, YAML best practices
- Using kubectl, k9s, namespaces, scaling, and logging
- Local development options and troubleshooting tools
Real-world questions we’ll explore:
- “Why does my app exit instantly when running locally, but takes up to 10 or 30 seconds when running in containers?”
-
“My Java or Go programs compile in a few seconds locally, so why does it take a few minutes to build their container images?”
Who Should Attend
- Self-taught devs looking to level up with formal training
- Engineers experiencing unexplained container behaviors and deployment pain
What’s Included
- 20 hours of live, instructor-led instruction: The class is a live stream, meaning that students can (and are invited to!) ask questions at any time if they want clarifications or concrete examples adapted to the language or framework that they use.
- Unlimited lab time during the week of the class: Each student is provided with multiple Kubernetes clusters to reflect both on-cloud and on-premises deployment scenarios.
- Comprehensive exercises at the end of each day: We recommend that each student plans for about an hour per day to work on the exercises and labs.
-
At least two hours of small-group mentoring and Q&A: The mentoring sessions will be over a video platform like Zoom, with the teacher and (depending on group size) TAs who will also have production experience.
